The people who were gathered to fight, and at risk of maiming and death, were mostly farmers. Even the call for muster that was spread out throughout the region must have been a horror. These were farmers who were being ordered to leave their families and join an army. And i guess they just had to hope that their loved ones would survive whatever pillaging might come their way.
