The Enigma of Reason
The Enigma of Reason is a new book by French researchers Dan Sperve and Hugo Mercier. They argue that reason is not the general superpower it's often purported to be. Instead they argue it is a specialized adaptation that was unique to the human environment. Why do bats have echolocation in so few animals? Well, it's because bats often evolve to live in caves or in low light circumstances where seeing with your eyes is quite difficult or even impossible. The same could be said for humans - we are predictably irrational.
