The APIs for different things that you can do, like accessing tabs or opening new tabs or exposing a setting screen on your browser settings are pretty consistent now. Getting your development environment up and running is a lot easier than it used to be. One tricky thing is this this manifest file that is required that sort of describes how your piece of code is exposed as an extension. They're almost the same, but there are small differences between them.
