The Moral Imagination

CHAPTER

Is There a Physical Explanation for This?

Aristotle famously said that there are four causes in nature that are needed to explain a particular state of affairs, the material cause, the formal cause, the efficient cause, and the final cause. You have to have a comprehensive explanation of why something is what it is; you need to understand those four causes. The answer we get from that is not the complete truth about nature but what nature has revealed to us within the framework of how we ask the question. And so any evidence in science that points otherwise gets ignored, that seems to be even a bigger problem.
