The birthplace of the japanese eel has been even a bigger mystery than for the european. Japanese scientists did eventually find the birthplace, but it was very weak and died just some hours after they found them. But really, all these centuries, eels have been deeply challenging for scientists. On the other hand, from a non science, purely gastronomic point of view, the eel has consistently been highly rewarding.
Where eels come from is a surprisingly difficult question to answer, in large part because scientists have never actually seen them reproduce in the wild. Gastropod explains why eels are somehow still so mysterious.
