Is There a Trigger for Longer Life History?

There's good evidence in birds, for example, that environmental variability is a trigger for these life history changes. It seems unlikely to me that the exact criteria is just the information that was available to you right from the moment you were gone. I think it's much more likely that being able to choose from a wider set of information, waiting and appropriate, which is not an option to make it much longer.
