There is a long tradition in philosophy of asking, even before artificial intelligence came around, how is it that we humans at least seem to have words? And when people started experimenting with computer systems that could make use of linguistic items of language early on in the development of artificial intelligence. How is that connection secured? There is a question as to whether the meaning of the words they use is only determined extrinsically by human interpreters. But these systems don't acquire language in the way humans do. They are trapped in this text on the world or at best in this virtual world or virtual objects like here's our LU.
