The Life and Times of Eleanor Roosevelt
Eleanor Roosevelt became America's first lady in March 1933. She held her own press conferences for female journalists and even wrote a newspaper column. Ellie remembers her grandmother and mother taking away the presents she and her brother received at those White House birthday parties to give them to poor families in the city. Eleanor also appointed an all-black staff in the White House.
