Patrick spent seven years as a slave and his main job was hurting sheep in the mountains. He writes about what an absolutely miserable life it was. Patrick steals away from his hut in the dead of knights without a word. With no possessions of note, all he carries is enough food and drink to last him a day or two. Despite the dangers and hardships, his faith doesn't waver.
