The Politics of the Civil Service Examination System in China

China's civil service examination system was very clever in terms of recruiting high quality human capital. But the other thing is that it has been very, very good at preventing political opposition. What China did was using thecivil service examination system to prevent these factional strife and conflicts then to establish the autocratic rule of the emperors. That transition took place around the sixth century when the civil service examinations were introduced.
