I was surprised by how widely shared the sentiment of these militia members was. Many people on the right viewed these attempts to control the pandemic as examples of an out of control government veering rapidly towards some kind of dictatorial oppressive power. It's a deep-seated fear and paranoia based on propaganda, conspiracy theories and lies that have been fed to them by people with means and power who benefit from their outrage. I think that it's important to keep in mind that while there are certainly legitimate policy debates to be had about the differences between Republicans and Democrats for this issue.
