Francois Duvalier was born into a modest middle-class Haitian family in 1907. The beautiful Caribbean state of Haiti occupies the western half of the island of Hispaniola. Back in the 1700s, it was called Sandoming and belonged to the French. John Markey is author of Papa Doc, portrait of a Haitian tyrant.
