I think the way that our modern culture has distilled the details of this fairy tale tells us that there is something enduring that carries even from medieval times. The idea that we do have to bear the consequences of an activity which we had enjoyed, and perhaps enjoyed without a sense of foresight. But this stranger, this tale says he's a mysterious man wearing a coat of many colored bright cloth,. for which reason he was called a pied piper.
