The Effects of Vinyl Chloride on the Environment
Vinyl chloride is a carcinogen, but over time, super short-term exposure to vinyl chloride isn't a concern. Chlorine gas is corrosive to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract; at high concentrations, it can be deadly. What was being released was hydrochloric acid, which is a hydrogen atom bound to a chlorine atom. It behaves differently than chlorine gas, but it's still not something you want to breathe in.
