Nettie Stevens' groundbreaking work on sex chromosomes was published in 1902. Despite her incredible accomplishments, she was never given a faculty position at Bryn Mawr University. Her colleagues recognized her brilliance but said they had "no one that was as capable and independent" In the 1800s, it would not have been easy to be an American woman living in those days.
