A lot of what we're talking about, it strikes me are basically impediments to success, right? Why does the detective not solve this mystery in the first scene? Because there are impediments to their success. Sometimes that is access to authority or to key information. And a lot of that middle part is just treading water in an entertaining way until we finally get that information.
