The house that is contested is not a valuable thing at all. It has almost no value, and the land it's standing on is unusable. And yet the family will not give it up - much like in south africa. The book was about e m forsternd and the end of howard's end very famously as a kind of celebration of place and belonging. That sense of connection and belonging is just not possible in south Africa because the land is under dispute.
