The invention of semiconductor technologies and propulsion technologies came from academia. Gordon Tullock has a story where he says that academia long ago had sort of hobbyists who were only there because they really loved itBecause they could have done other things. And then he said, well, we then had a lot of people who just tried academic because it was a good job which expanded greatly. They didn't actually care fundamentally about the topic. They just wanted a cushy job. That's all you need to apply more standards.
