Shakespeare's Hamlet
In Hamlet, Shakespeare gave us one of the first modern characters in literature. We have a tremendously intimate narrative relationship with Hamlet because there's nothing hidden from us. The audience's consciousness and the protagonist's consciousness are pretty much aligned throughout the play. And underlying it all is our knowledge that this is a tragedy and not going to end well.
