After the war, non-Jews dug in ghettos and former death camps. They were hoping to find hidden treasure. When they came across those milk cans, they thought that there was a buried gold in diamonds. And when they found the papers, they were just going to junk them. But then a foreman came back and said, no, we can't junk these. We have to take these to the Jewish Historical Institute. That's how Abraham Lewin Styrie survived. Unfortunately, Emmanuel Ringelblum did not survive.
