My Grandma and My Dad's Divorce
My dad grew up without a father, and also without half of his identity. His mother had blond hair and blue eyes; he and his brother had copper hair and distinct asian features. They stood out at their predominantly white school during a time of their life when they just wanted to fly under the radar. My grandma would do things to try to make it easier on her kids, like having them switch their chinese surname to her last name. For me, my age and heritage was such a negative thing in my life that i didn't want to to deal with that.
