In a time crystal, there's no net input of energy in the system and it should be able to spontaneously off its own accord show you this kind of periodic motion in time forever. The first law of thermodynamics would tell you that time crystals or perpetual motion machines are impossible. This had been the accepted wisdom for centuries. But recent developments have come from a corner of physics in which these laws of thermodynamics simply don't apply.
