The Rise of the Hungarian Nationalists
In 1849 a party favoring total independence came to power in the Hungarian Diet, led by a radical nationalist named Lios Kosuth. The new emperor and prime minister Schfartzenberg reached out to the Russian Tsar for help. He instituted an alternate so-called Stadione constitution that reserved the emperor exclusive power over foreign policy with an appointed advisory council. It guaranteed certain basic individual rights, but also maintained that German would be the one single official language of politics, education, and administration.
