The Role of Altruism in Nonprofit Organizations

The norm of self-interest is so strong that a version of it holds even in nonprofit organizations. Psychologists asked volunteers for students against drunk driving to read applications from two students interested in volunteering. Volunteers were more encouraging and supportive of the applicant whose sister had been killed than they were of the other applicant. Contrary to what many believe, there is an enormous amount of altruistic, caring behavior in everyday life.
