The American League Record Is 61
The American league record is 61 and the Yankee club record is 61. Roger Maris set the record in 1961 but it was controversial at the time because of Ford Frick's stance on Babe Ruth. Mark Maguire hit, Sammy Sosa both cleared 61 and then a couple of years later or well in 2001 Barry Bonds got the 72. All of those records were set by guys who were incredibly accused or proven to have used steroids that were illegal under the law and or illegal under the game's rules.
