Introduction

Bovine Spungeiform Encephalopathy is the formal name for Mad Cow Disease. The disease was first discovered in 1986 and killed nearly 200,000 cows over a decade. In 1996, BSE made its way into humans for the first time; everyone infected has died. Since August 1997, the US FDA has banned the use of most cow parts to be used to make cow feed.
