I think just being aware that we're prone to avoiding unpleasant information is a good step. George Lowenstein and David Hagman are both working on these issues over at Carnegie Mellon University. The next time you see a headline in the paper that goes against your views, read the article. And go beyond the news and read opinion pieces that argue against what you believe. I think it really requires an active effort to overcome.
