What Are Witches in Popular Culture?

In ancient fiction, women were seen as scary because they tried to claim some kind of power for themselves. The word witch wasn't necessarily rolled into that yo, correct? Usually if you're calling somebody a witch, the reason you're doing it is to connote something negative about her. So how does marvel and marvels witches kind of fit into this evolution?
