As plastic degrades, it creates fragments that are invisible to the naked eye. Researchers measured levels of these fragments that were released from two types of vessel commonly used to prepare and store food for infants. One container studied released more than 4 million microplastics and 1 billion nanoplastics per square centimeter in a three-minute microwaving session. An infant weighing 10 kilograms would consume up to 1.4 micrograms of micro and nanoscale plastic fragments per week if drinking water had been microwaved using such a container.
