Ship Wars - A History of the Semiconductor Industry
Semiconductors play a big role in military competition, but also because there's been a relentless struggle between companies to develop and commercialize the best ship technology. When you start with the history of the industry in the 1950s and early 60s, what you find is that most semiconductor firms were producing everything they need in-house. Over time, as semiconductors have gotten more advanced and the technology has gotten more complex, there's been tremendous specialization in the supply chain. And it's been specialization that has resulted in the emergence of new firms, but also in the geographic spread of the industry to new countries.
