Lewis's Children's Novels

Was it always going to be a series, or did he write one book as a kind of self contained thing? How did that develop? I personally think he wrote the line n which in the wardrobe. And actually, if you look at how it ends, it doesn't imply there's anything more to come. But actually, clearly he had a sort of spurt of creative genius and felt that, i could do more with this.
