The Grace of Holy Orders
Aquinas says Jesus was moved to offer himself on the cross by the instinct and impulse of the Holy Spirit. He thinks this is why Jesus instituted ministers in the church so that they would become instruments of Christ the priest for the sake of sanctification, he writes. Aquinas: Just as baptism infuses the grace of the Holyspirit into the baptized, holy orders adds to the man's common baptismal vocation a new and further specification. They offer these spiritual sacrifices as a participation in the priestly act of Christ, the true high priest, as he above all offers himself on theCross.
