The Golden Age of the Ptolemaic Dynasty

The third century has often been described as the Golden Age of the Ptolemaic dynasty. The decline of the army was attributed by the ancient authors to the indolence of Ptolemi IV. This backfired when Antiochus III launched his invasion of Cuyles Syria and kick started the 4th Syrian War in 219. No taxes would have been collected from wealthy CuylesSyria and surrounding provinces, further hampering the king's ability to recoup his expenses.
