Eleanor Caton's the Luminaries
Eleanor Caton came onto my radar when her second novel, The Luminaries, won the Man Booker Prize. I had jumped on that bandwagon and was eager to see what her next offering would be 10 years later. And then once I was there, there was no going back. Now this book is a tragedy. It has a grim outlook and steadily marches towards what the reader fears will be. A horrifying conclusion. So in that respect, it's a real outlier in my usual reading diet. But apart from the accelerating pace, the characterization is absolutely exquisite.
