In your latest book, contemplating the end of time, you also talk about experiencing a hollow dread. What bit of physics would have prompted a response like that? Well, i started to think about what physics tells us about the very far future. And it does suggest that what we consider lasting and permanent is not. It all goes away. That was an emotional rethink for me. But the idea is you need to focus on the here and now because that's the only thing in the world that you have access to.
