In the early modern age in general, roma tended to be seen as a dangerous or unwonted, undesirable presence in european society. So theyre seen is a destabilizing, possibly subversive element. The most repressive and intolerant time, it seems, was the 16 hundreds and early 17 hundreds,. basically coinciding with the general crisis of the seventeenth century.
