The Importance of Intermarriage in the Book of Exodus
The focus of the concluding two chapters of the book of ezra, exogomy, marrying outside of israel, is one that unsettles many modern readers. The sertion of ill fitting categories such as ethnicity, race and nationality into our consideration of these passages can easily produce confusion of what is actually at issue. Concern about intermarriage is hardly a theme peculiar to ezra and nehemiah. For instance, in exodus, chapter 34, verses 11 16, we see the lord speaking to this issue, emphasizing the importance of resisting intermarriage with the pagan nations.
