The Antinomian Debate in the 17th Century

People who argued that salvation was a gift from God and not something that had to be earned were often described as antinomian, coming from Greek words roughly meaning against the law. One of the 17th century figures who brought these ideas into more prominence was Puritan minister John Cotton. He emigrated to the colonies in 1633 after facing legal action for his nonconforming religious views back in England.
