Tocqueville wanted to see America for himself because he understood as a young man that it was the great political and social experiment. A country like France was really constrained in how it could experiment with democracy, says Julian Zelizer. But Americans had two great advantages: It didn't have the deep toe of history and it had the expanse of its geography said Zelizer.
