There was an outbreak of the covid virus, compounded with a social unrest. The protest oni d and then there was the outbreak of s of asepas. People seriously believed that the people's liberation army would be sending tanks across the border to crush the protest movement. That didn't happen. And incidentally, although it, i don't think, was as crystal clear as it was, it is now compound by the increasing clampdown within mainland china itself on political opposition.
