i think we can find the hiawatha influence in the second theme of the movement, one of the loneliest de vorga ever wrote. It's very easy and natural to see where we could get o the longfellow poem from this passage. And the loneliness of this melody is then replaced by hopelessness as the music recedes into itself here. Again, i don't think devorge gets enough credit for his orchestration. We hear a walking bass and we have a shuddering accompaniment in the strings. And then of course, we have the melody played by gloomy and covered clarinets. All creates an emotional effect that is almost unmatched by any other composer
