The story of the were bigger than jesus controversy is one of the most widely misreported events in the lives of the beetles. John lennon gave an interview to his friend marin cleve of the evening standard, during which he made some comments about how it was depressing that christianity was losing relevancy. An american team magazine picked up on the line and reprinted chunks of the interview out of context as a way to stir up controversy. And there was an outcry, with people burning beetles records and death threats from the cu s clan.
