The Role of Rationality in Choice

The self torture is categorial appraisal responses are such that some options qualify as terrible. It's therefore not rationally acceptable for the self torture to wind up with a terrible option. But since that's where following his preferences would lead him, he must at some point show restraint and act against one of his preferences. And these responses are associated with a rational requirement that both in theory and in practice sometimes calls for acting counter preferential.
