Introduction
William Davis is a sociologist and political economist at Goldsmiths. He delivered the first of this year's LRB Winter Lectures back after a three-year pandemic hiatus. His lecture was on the subject of the Reaction Economy, which he says inculcates a certain sort of reactive psychology in people who use social media platforms. It also raises questions about how public figures such as Donald Trump have developed an ability to react for their audiences.
