Catheter-Directed Thrombolysis: What You Need to Know

If your patient does not have a properly formed IVC and is reliant upon collateral pathways such as the azigas system to deliver blood back to the heart, they are at a significantly increased risk of forming a DVT. Other common causes could be a malpositioned or wrongly sized central venous catheter with subsequent delivery of caustic medication like TPN. The ATRAC trial showed that the catheter-directed thrombolysis procedure was most beneficial in deep venous thrombosis involving veins above the inguinal ligament.
