Franco's Choices in the Battle of Madrid
Franco wasn't a brilliant general, but he was pretty good at the sort of wars he was used to fighting. Had he been trying to defend Poland in 1939 or France in 1940 or the Soviet Union in 1941, he would have been one of the many generals. He had no notion, no notion of how to fight a mobile war, at least how to fight against armed divisions and everything that come with him.
