The ideas and customs that make up our cultural milieu, all of these build on one another like a pyramid. Each layer above it is dependent on the layer below it being fully secure and in place. The base does more to set the parameters of the overall structure than any section built above it. When you get yourself up to the top of the pyramid, this pyramid of ideas or cultural pyramid, maybe it's crowned by a lofty idea like universal human rights.
