Some cities like melos and scione had been virtually annihilated, while the females and children were sold off into slavery. Plataia lost a great portion of its population and was forced to relocate to athens. In sparta, absolute numbers dropped less sharply, but their citizen population had been declining since the mid fifth century b c. Victory in the war brought unprecedented quantities of foreign wealth into sparta,. though wealth and money previously had not been as totally absent as the spartans later liked to imagine.
