I'm sure that God was not taken by surprise by sin. If we had not sinned perhaps he would have found a way to work out the maximum revelation of his glory in human beings but it didn't work that way. In any case if you just think about human life in terms of innocence you realize that innocence while it is beautiful is not the greatest thing you could imagine. That's why I say that and I think we see it in smaller measure in the stories we like to tell ourselves in fiction and real life about our lives.
