Dostoyevsky's Motives for the Murder
Dostoyevsky created a much bigger and more important motive, which was explained by the liberal reforms in russia. He probably thought that killing just this one unpleasant woman wouldn't persuade his readers, so he made her innocent sister come in at the time of the murder. The month when the crime was published, a similar episode actually took place. A young student, danilo, killed a pawnbroker and his mate. It was just a coincidence. But it became a huge promotion for the readers, because it made o novel fashionable. And afterwards, there was more and more blood to come in Russia.
